Commonwealth Games Australia President, Ben Houston, has welcomed the induction of renowned sports physician Dr. Peter Harcourt AM and Glasgow 2014 champion Laura Geitz to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
The duo is among a class of seven Inductees for 2025, representing the Commonwealth Sport family alongside a cohort that also includes Lleyton Hewitt AM, Mark Schwarzer OAM and Torah Bright OAM.
Harcourt has established himself as one of Australia’s, and the world’s, most respected and experienced sports medicine practitioners and anti-doping experts over four decades, continuing his involvement with the Commonwealth Games as Medical Advisor to the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board.
Geitz donned the green and gold on 71 occasions, was a member of two Netball World Cup winning teams in 2011 and 2015 and won three medals at the Commonwealth Games, including gold as captain at Glasgow 2014.
“The class of Sport Australia Hall of Fame inductees for 2025 highlight the outstanding contribution that sport makes to our way of life, and we welcome the acknowledgement of Commonwealth Sport family members Peter Harcourt and Laura Geitz,” Houston said.
“Peter’s contribution to medical services at the Games is second to none. The Chief Medical Officer at Melbourne 2006, he continues to serve as the Medical Advisor to the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board and will be integral to the delivery of Glasgow 2026 next year.”
“The Australian Diamonds are among our most lauded teams and Laura has been at the heart of their success.
“A silver medallist at Delhi 2010 and Gold Coast 2018, she was captain when the green and gold became Commonwealth champions at Glasgow 2014. Her contribution to netball has been immense.”
“We look forward to celebrating the seven inductees alongside their family and friends in November.”
Sport Australia Hall of Fame Committee Chair, Bruce McAvaney OAM, highlighted the inspiring nature of this year’s Inductees.
“The seven new Inductees into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame are a diverse group representing team and individual sports at the highest level,” McAvaney said.
“They’ve inspired generations of Australians and provided our country with so much joy. Nothing is obvious when choosing between champions from so many different sports, but we know the class of 2025 sits comfortably alongside those who’ve already been recognised in the most prestigious Hall of Fame in this country.”
The 2025 Inductees will be celebrated and formally inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame at the Induction and Awards Gala Dinner on Monday, November 17, at Crown Palladium in Melbourne.
