Commonwealth Games Australia applauds the exemplary career of Melissa Wu, with the three-time Games gold medallist announcing her retirement from diving today.

Wu’s announcement brings to a close an illustrious career that includes five appearances at the Commonwealth Games stretching back to Melbourne 2006, where aged 13, she won silver alongside Alexandra Croak in 10-metre synchronised platform.

Wu went on to secure gold in the same event at Delhi 2010, before adding another gold in the individual 10m platform at Gold Coast 2018.

She rounded out her Commonwealth Games career with a third gold in the 10m synchronised platform at Birmingham 2022, competing alongside 14-year-old Charli Petrov.

Wu’s five Commonwealth Games appearances set a new benchmark for Australian diving, as did her five Olympic campaigns, which included a silver in the 10m synchronised platform at Beijing 2008 and bronze in the individual 10m platform at Tokyo 2020.

“I’m proud of everything I’ve achieved,” Wu said, of her time on the pool deck.

“As an athlete I hope my performances continues to inspire the next generation of all athletes, not just divers. I’d like to think my career shows athletes you can have longevity, and that you can do it at any age. I always wanted to keep giving back – and I still do.”

Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips AM praised Wu’s career, highlighting her success and leadership within the sport.

“Melissa’s achievements speak for themselves. She has been a standout competitor for nearly two decades, and her impact on Australian sport will be felt for years to come,” Phillips said.

“Her results on the podium are a testament to her skill and dedication, while her resilience and determination have made her a role model for future athletes.”

“The Commonwealth Games are at the heart of Melissa’s story, and we look forward to now watching her flourish in retirement.”
