Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) has joined the Sports Environment Alliance (SEA), uniting in a shared commitment to protecting the places where we play.
As a leader in Australian sport, CGA understands the importance of embedding environmental and climate responsibility across all levels of its work, particularly as it prepares to lead future teams to the Commonwealth Games.
Through this new partnership, CGA and SEA will collaborate to implement practical environmental initiatives and share knowledge across the sector.
CGA CEO Craig Phillips AM said the organisation’s decision to join SEA reflects its long-term commitment to embedding sustainability into all aspects of its operations and Games planning.
“Joining SEA is important to CGA because we recognise the need to integrate environmental responsibility into our everyday work,” said Phillips.
“This membership gives us the opportunity to learn from other leading sporting bodies and apply proven strategies that reduce our impact. As we look ahead to future Games, we want to ensure sustainability is part of our legacy.”
CGA has already taken meaningful steps, including the development of an environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework through extensive consultation.
This is now being embedded across CGA’s operations, with environmental considerations informing key decisions, from team apparel procurement to event planning and logistics.
Margot Foster AM OLY, Chair of SEA, aid CGA’s decision to join the alliance highlights the growing role of major sporting organisations in driving environmental leadership across the sector.
“Sport has a responsibility to lead by example. CGA’s membership of SEA reflects a growing awareness that what happens off the field is just as important as the performance on it,” Foster said.
“We welcome CGA’s commitment and look forward to walking with them as this important sports leader takes practical steps to reduce its environmental impact and protect the places we all value.”
SEA CEO Adam Cheyne said CGA’s involvement would help accelerate collective action across sport, bringing the influence of a major Games movement to the alliance’s growing network.
“Commonwealth Games Australia brings reach, insight and leadership to the alliance. We’re proud to support their journey and strengthen the role of sport in building a climate-ready future, for athletes, supporters and communities across the Commonwealth.”
