A standout debut performance in Glasgow has earned Jye Dixon our Emerging Athlete title for August, with gold in the men’s 55kg division capping off a memorable international debut.
“I’m very grateful to receive this award, been training hard for 10 plus years now and feel very blessed,” Dixon said, of the recognition.
Dixon expressed his pride in representing Australia and reflected on the joy he has experienced since winning gold. The achievement has strengthened both his and his team’s belief in their abilities, giving them greater confidence as they continue their journey.
“It has changed my life and made me believe in myself and my team.”
Dixon not only enjoyed himself in competition, but in and around the Games environment too, claiming it the ‘best experience of [his] life’.
Appreciative of every bit of the Glasgow Games experience, he was quick to highlight the comradery between all sports and athletes, and what it means to be a Commonwealth Games athlete.
Although, Dixon jokingly admits that the weight cut was the only thing he did not love about his Games experience.
The overall experience has pushed him to try harder and take his boxing as far as he can, instilling more confidence in himself.
Praising his sport on having a positive impact on his life, particularly the ongoing support from his team, Dixon claims that as much as boxing is competed individually, it is also a team sport through the support system around him.
Boxing has allowed him to develop his character and persist when he faces setbacks. It has given him the strength and perseverance to tackle his everyday life too.
When it comes to his matches, he best prepares for his bouts mentally, using his religion to better equip his head space to be at his best and perform his best.
Dixon is a hard-working athlete who believes in his discipline and positive attitude, which reflects similarly on a piece of advice that he had received, “if you truly try your best in all areas, you WON’T FAIL.”
His consistent attitude to his fights and training has pushed him to be the boxer that he is today.
Dixon continues to push hard in his boxing, wanting to bring everything he can to his career, but more importantly, he wanted to be able to become a key face on the internet to spread positive impact on the world and inspire the next generation.
This recognition as the Emerging Athlete for August is a demonstration of not only his gold medal, but his determination and desire to be a beacon of light for everyone around him.
The Commonwealth Games serves as a platform for developing the future stars of Australian sport and the Emerging Athlete of the Year forms part of a refreshed Awards and Honours program developed by the CGA Heritage and Awards Committee.
The CGA Emerging Athlete of the Year Award celebrates the next generation of Australian sport stars and those that may make an impact for Australia at major sport events in the future.
Over the course of 2026, an athlete will be recognised each month as the Emerging Athlete of the Month and will receive a $500 contribution towards their training and competition expenses.
Three finalists from the monthly winners will then split a $7000 cash prize, with the winner receiving $5000 and the two runners-up $1000 respectively.
