Our emerging athlete of the month of September – Madison Lyon

By Alex Ratcliffe

The month of September was one to remember for 2022 U19’s Junior Squash Champion, Madison Lyon, winning her second national championship and reinforced her place as one of Australia’s premier Squash players of the future.

After winning her first Junior championship two years ago, Madi continued her success to beat her competition. At 17 Madi competed in the U19 title, impressively beating some competitors two years older than her.

Based in Queensland, Madi grew up around the courts and was exposed to the sport from a young age, influenced by her father and sister.

“I was around the courts from so young and there was nothing else to do other than play,” Lyon said.

This exposure to Squash at such a young age grew Madi’s love for the game and with her recent success, she has all eyes on the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“It’s really cool, I think it’s amazing that Aussie athletes will be able to compete on home soil and get the support from locals!”

Looking forward to growing her world rank in the lead-up to Victoria 2026, and with the hope of playing overseas to represent her country, Madi’s eyes are firmly on gold for Victoria 2026.

“An inspiration of mine is Heather McKay, she has such an amazing record,” said Lyon.

“She (McKay) was so dominant for her time and had an amazing winning streak on the tour and I just really like that about her.”

Over the course of 2022, an athlete will be recognised each month as the Commonwealth Games Australia emerging athlete of the month and will receive a $500 gift certificate as a contribution towards their training expenses.

Three finalists from the monthly winners will be invited to the 2023 Commonwealth Games Australia Presidents Function where one will be named the Commonwealth Games Australia Emerging Athlete of the Year.

The annual winner, selected by the Awards Sub Committee will receive a $5000 CGA scholarship toward their sporting career.
