Fresh off a standout win and commanding triumph at the 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, Connor Wright has been named Emerging Athlete for September.
“This award means a lot for myself and all the people in my corner,” Wright said, of receiving the recognition.
Reflecting on the milestone, he said it was a fitting reward for the years of hard work and dedication behind the achievement.
At the end of August, Wright was crowned World Champion in the Junior Cross Country winning by a margin of one minute and 16 seconds, becoming just the third Aussie to win the junior men’s title.
“This has been a goal of mine since being a little boy and to have ticked it off this early into my career has been an amazing thing.”
Wright’s success has been nothing but consistent throughout 2026, winning a National title and an Oceania title, while also claiming successive wins in Europe. He attributed his success to his consistency in his training and his own self-belief.
A consistent year of achievements has set him up well as he takes his next steps into the under-23 category in 2027.
Wright has also been able to challenge himself on the road, winning the National Junior Championships Road Time Trial earlier in the year and securing a stage win in Czechia.
This led to a debut at the UCI Junior Road World Championships in September where he finished in 22nd place.
Wright acknowledged how challenging the road discipline can be and loves the battle he gets from it. His aspirations for road are to keep moving up the ranks, with an eventual aim to compete at the race world tour level consistently.
Wright also reflected on the opportunity to represent Australia, describing it as ‘something special’, praising how ‘it will always bring the best out of you’, while recognising the privilege of wearing the green and gold.
Cycling has always been a constant part of Wright’s life; both his dad and brother are heavily involved in the sport, in particular his dad who has been coaching him his whole life.
While Wright relishes the challenges that cycling presents and the way it keeps him on his toes, it is ultimately the enjoyment he derives from the sport that fuels his passion.
His love for the sport is as genuine as it gets, and his passion has never wavered.
“It’s simply something I’ve always loved to do and that love for competing has never gone away.”
Wright was clear on the trust that he has on his training and being confident on the hard work and dedication he has put in.
Constantly leaning on this piece of advice that he continues to remind himself with.
“To enjoy every aspect of your sport, the best version of yourself will come out when you’re doing something you love to do.”
Abiding by this has helped Wright to continue to breed the passion and determination that he has for his sport, while moving towards his overall goal of competing at the Olympics on the mountain bike.
Wright’s success and his ability to stay mentally strong puts his future in a bright spot as he continues to push his cycling to new levels.
The Commonwealth Games serves as a platform for developing the future stars of Australian sport and the Emerging Athlete of the Year forms part of a refreshed Awards and Honours program developed by the CGA Heritage and Awards Committee.
The CGA Emerging Athlete of the Year Award celebrates the next generation of Australian sport stars and those that may make an impact for Australia at major sport events in the future.
Over the course of 2026, an athlete will be recognised each month as the Emerging Athlete of the Month and will receive a $500 contribution towards their training and competition expenses.
Three finalists from the monthly winners will then split a $7000 cash prize, with the winner receiving $5000 and the two runners-up $1000 respectively.
