Australia’s Artistic Gymnastics team has delivered one of its strongest Commonwealth Games campaigns, collecting nine medals across five days of competition at Glasgow International Arena.

A blend of experienced campaigners and Commonwealth Games debutants combined to win four gold, one silver and four bronze medals, with every one of the 10 athletes selected in the men’s and women’s teams coming home with a medal.

Leading the charge was Georgia Godwin, who etched her name into Australian sporting history by becoming the nation’s most decorated female artistic gymnast at the Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old was overcome with emotion after helping Australia secure the women’s team gold medal, bursting into tears as the magnitude of the achievement sank in.

Godwin claimed her ninth Commonwealth Games medal alongside Kate McDonald, Emily Whitehead, Breanna Scott and Ruby Pass as Australia produced a dominant display across vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor to claim the country’s first women’s team title since Delhi 2010.

McDonald continued Australia’s golden run by capturing the uneven bars title. Determined to make amends after a disappointing campaign in Birmingham four years earlier, the Victorian shut out the noise with her headphones on, before producing a near-flawless routine that earned 14.333 points.

Scott also enjoyed a breakthrough Games, winning balance beam gold and individual all-around silver.

The beam specialist showcased her composure to score 13.933 and claim the apparatus title, while in the all-around, she recovered from a slow start to surge into the medals with a standout beam routine worth 13.900 points.

On the men’s side, Jesse Moore once again demonstrated his class on the international stage.

The experienced campaigner produced a polished parallel bars routine to claim gold, while in the individual all-around he took out bronze after recovering from an early setback to finish on the podium in front of an enthusiastic Glasgow crowd.

Australia’s men’s team of Moore, Benjamin Foster, Tru Hagens, James Hardy and Ritam Malik also ended a 16-year wait for a Commonwealth Games team medal, claiming bronze on the opening day of competition. It was the nation’s first men’s team podium finish since Delhi 2010.

Hardy capped a memorable Commonwealth Games debut with bronze medals on both rings and floor, ending Australia’s 16-year medal drought on the two apparatuses.

The 23-year-old competed with a pink ribbon painted on the nail of his right-hand ring finger in tribute to his mother, Sally, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Now in remission after surgery, she was unable to travel to Glasgow, making Hardy’s emotional performances all the more meaningful.

Australia finished the artistic gymnastics competition with nine medals, including four gold, to place second on the overall medal table behind Canada, which claimed 16 medals, including seven gold.
