At the end of a relentlessly successful day for Australia’s badminton team at the Commonwealth Games, Jacob Schueler’s defeat in the men’s singles put paid to the prospect of a magnificent seven victories.

Victorian Schueler, on his Games debut, was frustrated to lose his first round match to Jamaican Samuel Rickets at the National Exhibition Centre 21-19 21-15 on Wednesday evening after the Aussies had picked up six straight wins.

His fellow men’s singles players, Lin Ying Xiang and Nathan Tang, though, both successfully made progress to the last 32.

Tang defeated Kenya’s Sammy Sikoyo 21-13 21-10 while Lin accounted for Malta’s Matthew Abela 21-16 21-9.

Another first-timer at the Games, Angela Yu, whose younger brother Jack is also on the team, was the busiest winner of the day.

Having teamed up with Tran Hoang Pham to win their mixed doubles against Falkland Islands pair Dwight Joshua and Soraye March, Yu was back in action about an hour later with Kaitlyn Ea to ease home in the women’s doubles against a Maldives pairing.
