Tenacious fight sees Australian badminton pair through to semi-final

A tenacious and determined fight has seen Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen and Gronya Somerville progress through to the women’s doubles semi-final match, the sole Australian’s remaining in the badminton competition.

The dramatic game was a tight one and saw long rallies filled with explosive strokes throughout, the longest rally being 115 strokes.

However, the Aussies kept their spirits up throughout the game, determined to give it their all in search of the win.

After losing the first set 18 – 21, the pair were quick to regroup and refocus in the second game, resolutely focusing on each of the rallies as they came.

They fought back to win the second set 21 – 15, before going on to win the third set 21 – 16, setting up a semi-final showdown with England’s Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith.

“The first two (games) there were a lot of times where we couldn’t really get any momentum… whereas in the third, we focused on being ready every rally and not worrying about the previous one, the next one, just trying to be alert for the one coming up,” said Somerville.

Key to their win was their ability to encourage and support one another, even in the midst of some of the longer rallies throughout the games.

“We encouraged each other,” said Chen, “I encouraged her when she was doing her rallies… to keep going.”

Somerville will be looking to improve on her performance from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, which saw her finish fourth in the women’s doubles.

In the other matches of the day, Chen lost to Singapore’s Jia Min Yeo 2 – 0 in the women’s singles, while both men’s doubles pairs of Jacob Schueler and Nathan Tang, and Tran Hoang Pham and Jack Yu also lost their matches 2 – 0.

Chen and Somerville will be back on the show court Sunday 7 August at 11:50am local (8:50pm AEST).
