Farewell to an Australian Sporting Legend

Commonwealth Games Australia is saddened by the passing of Australian sporting legend Betty Cuthbert.

Among Cuthbert’s myriad of sprinting achievements, she represented Australia at the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth and British Empire Games winning a pair of silver medals, in the 220-yard dash and as part of the relay team.

Following an 18-month retirement, Cuthbert returned, making the Australian team for the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. It was there she won her one and only Commonwealth Games gold medal, holding off all challengers down the straight with characteristic ‘mouth open wide’ to anchor the relay team to gold.

Cuthbert will be forever remembered as the ‘Golden Girl’ of Australian athletics and holds and esteemed place as a Legend of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Commonwealth Games Australia extends its heartfelt condolences to Betty’s family, friends and loved ones.
