Gronya Somerville

Gronya Somerville (badminton) featured in her third Commonwealth Games in 2022 where she reached the semi-finals of the women’s doubles with Wendy Chen, Australia’s best result in Birmingham. She also reached the round of 16 in the mixed doubles with Lin Ying Xiang. Gronya began playing badminton after being discovered at a talent identification program in 2009, claiming her first national junior title at 14 and making her first senior Australian team at 16. A doubles specialist, she has won eight Oceania events, six women’s titles and two mixed titles including four consecutive women’s doubles titles from 2017 to 2020 with then partner Setyana Mapasa.  At the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, she was knocked out of the women’s doubles at the round of 32, while the team was knockout out in the quarter-finals. Four years later on the Gold Coast, she finished fourth in the women’s doubles with Setyana after going in as no. 1 seeds, losing the bronze-medal match to India. She was also in the mixed doubles and teams’ events, knocked out at the quarter-final stage in both. She played at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in both women’s doubles and the teams’ event but was eliminated at the groups stage in both. She was also part of Australia’s 2022 Uber Cup team. Gronya has a Bachelor of Exercise Science from Victoria University
