Peter Doherty
Peter Doherty (lawn bowls) acted director for Helen Boardman who teamed up with Jake Fehlberg to finish 4th in the B2/B3 mixed pairs at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Peter was the Australian Blind Bowls Association’s national coach when he became aware of Helen. At that time, Helen was director for another player but had no bowls experience and wanted to be coached as a way to improve her directing. Peter quickly recognised her potential and when Helen’s competitive instinct soon took over, she started playing with Peter as director and coach. Peter became involved in coaching in the early 1990s, initially as a way to increase the club membership at Mount Crosby Bowls Club near Brisbane. He retired from playing in 2003 to concentrate on coaching players with disabilities and in 2009 was the first bowls coach to graduate from the University of Queensland with a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science – Sports Coaching. He also has a postgraduate diploma in sports coaching.
