Serena Bonnell
Serena Bonnell (lawn bowls) joined teammate Cheryl Lindfield to win silver in the B6-B8 women’s pairs at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. It wasn’t the first Commonwealth Games medal in the family; Serena’s husband Tony Bonnell won gold in the men’s open triples on the Gold Coast in 2018 and Serena trained with Tony on the greens at the Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club which had been specially prepared to mirror the UK conditions. Serena was also named in a squad to tour the UK in May 2022, after claiming the Australian Open pairs title with Tony in 2021. In 2001, Serena was doing a law and psychology degree at Griffith University and travelled to China to do a legal internship. She became critically ill and by the time she returned home, she had limited use of left arm and was starting to lose the use of her right leg and spent six months in hospital. Serena got into lawn bowls over a decade ago after watching the sport on television. She realised that this was a sport that she could do in an inclusive and adaptive environment, so she contacted the local bowls club and the rest is history.
