Tom Wickham

Tom Wickham (hockey) made his second Commonwealth Games appearance in Birmingham after making his debut on the Gold Coast in 2018 as a late call-up to replace the injured Blake Govers.

Born and raised in Morgan in South Australia’s Riverland, Wickham spent time growing up in Alice Springs before moving to Perth in 2011 to take up a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport. He made his Kookaburras debut in 2013 but was unable to add to his two caps that year until a breakout 2017 when he played all 32 games for the calendar year and scored 15 goals, including a double in the Oceania Cup final win against New Zealand. He was also part of the side that lifted the World League title that year.

The Perth Thundersticks striker was named as one of two reserves for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team, but a late rule change allowed reserves to be used in the tournament. He scored six times in the tournament, including Australia’s lone goal in the extra-time loss to Belgium in the final.
