A trio of judokas, all of whom have claimed a medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, are ready to don the green and gold, following their selection to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Katharina Haecker, who took home a bronze medal in the women’s 63kg leads the selection, equaling the most Olympic judo appearances by an Australian woman at her third Games.
She’s joined by Aoife Coughlan, who won gold in the women’s 70kg, and Josh Katz, also a bronze medallist, who will contest the men’s 60kg.
Both return to the team for their second Olympic Games, seeing the Australian team put forth a strong contingent when the Games begin.
Katz continues his rich family history in the sport, with brother Nathan Katz also a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and dual Olympian, while their mum Kerrye competed at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games when judo was a demonstration sport.
Coughlan and Haecker are both in pre-Games preparations in Europe, while Katz was inspired by 40 young judokas he coaches in Sydney surprising him with his Qantas ticket to Paris.
The team also includes coach Daniel Kelly – a four time Olympic judoka competitor and now third Games as a coach, making Paris his seventh Games in a row as part of the Australian judo team.
The announcement sees the current Australian Olympic Team at 235 of an expected 460-strong Team.
Haecker, who will compete in the -63kg division in Paris, said it feels amazing to be officially selected to her third Olympic Team.
“The sports require a lot of commitment, discipline and just trusting the process. When I step out in Paris, I want to give my best, do myself justice and get that medal.”
The Judo competition will be held from Saturday 27 July to Saturday 3 August at champ-de-Mars Arena in Paris.
With thanks to the Australian Olympic Committee and Judo Australia.
