Ollie Saxton has claimed Australia’s second weightlifting medal at the Commonwealth Games, taking bronze in Glasgow.

The Western Australian logged a total of 336 kilograms in the men’s 94kg event on Thursday morning (AEST), pulling off a 156kg snatch and a 180kg clean-and-jerk lift.

Malaysia’s Mohamed Syahmi Nor-Ghazali set a Games total record to win gold, lifting 347kg overall for his nation’s fourth Glasgow title in the sport.

Canadian weightlifter Alex Bellemarre claimed silver with a combined lift of 346kg.

Saxton finished third after falling short of setting a personal best, failing to make 160kg in the snatch and 191kg in the clean-and-jerk.

But the 23-year-old has emulated his father and three-time Games gold medallist Andrew Saxton.

Some 40 years since his father won bronze at his debut Games in Edinburgh, Saxton finished on the podium in the same country.

It is Australia’s second weightlifting medal in Glasgow after Nya Hayman won bronze on day five in the women’s 69kg class.

Earlier on day six in Glasgow, compatriot Isabella Andueza failed to score a snatch lift score in the women’s 77kg category, which was won by Samoan teenager Seine Stowers.
