The Australian Commonwealth Games Team will be well supported when competition kicks off in Glasgow, with 604 Sideline Champions set to get behind the green and gold in person.

Presented by national insurer AAMI, Sideline Champions is a Games-time initiative designed to recognise, engage and celebrate the family, friends and supporter networks behind the Australian Team.

The program acknowledges those who contribute to the athlete journey beyond the field of play, fostering a sense of connection, belonging and shared pride throughout Glasgow 2026.

With both in-person and virtual opportunities available, Sideline Champions ensures supporters can be part of the Team Australia experience, no matter where they are.

Sideline Champion Helen Kean, mother of two-time Commonwealth Games weightlifter Brenna Kean said being part of the program made them feel closer to their loved one’s Games journey.

“As a mum and supporter, you see the long hours of training and commitment, the juggling of a career, all the sacrifices and hard work that go on behind the scenes, so it’s incredibly special to be part of this experience,” Kean said.

“Watching someone you love dearly about to represent Australia on such a big stage fills you with incredible pride and admiration. Even if we’re not standing right beside her, we’ll be cheering just as loudly every step of the way.”

Fellow Sideline Champion Petra Lorenz, mother of two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kurtis Marschall, said the opportunity to support her son during the Games was something she would never forget.

“It’s hard to put into words how exciting it is to watch someone you’ve supported for years achieve their dream of wearing the green and gold,” Lorenz said.

“The whole family feels like we’re on this journey together. Knowing we’ll be able to share in the experience, celebrate the highs and support him through every moment makes Glasgow feel a little closer to home.”

Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips AM said the program shines a light on the people who help make every Team Australia journey possible.

“Behind every athlete is a team of people who have supported them every step of the way, whether that’s family, friends, coaches or community members,” Phillips said.

“The Sideline Champions program is about recognising those people and giving them the opportunity to be part of the Games experience.

“Their support plays a huge role in helping our athletes perform at their best, and we’re proud to celebrate that contribution in Glasgow.”

Executive General Manager Brand & Customer Experience Mim Haysom said the insurer was proud to help bring supporters closer to the team.

“Behind every athlete chasing gold in Glasgow is a Sideline Champion who helped make that dream possible.

“At AAMI, we’ve proudly backed Australian sport from grassroots participation to the world stage, and we’re thrilled to celebrate the parents, partners, coaches, family and friends whose support, sacrifice and belief help our athletes get there.

“Whether they’re in the stands in Glasgow or cheering from home, Sideline Champions is about recognising the people behind the performance and giving them the opportunity to be part of every unforgettable moment.”

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
