Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) welcomes the $15.6 million investment by the Australian Government to assist the next generation of Pacific sporting talent on their journey to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
To be delivered in partnership by CGA, the Australian Olympic Committee and Paralympics Australia, this continued investment ensures that 13 Pacific countries will have access high-performance training and qualification opportunities to compete at major international sporting events.
This includes the Tahiti 2027 Pacific Games, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Rarotonga 2029 Pacific Games, before Amdavad 2030 and the Commonwealth Games deliver one final pit stop before Brisbane 2032.
The funding also ensures continued investment in GAPS, a Commonwealth Sport and Griffith University led initiative that delivers critical training, competition and classification opportunities for able-bodied and Para athletes and officials looking to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
In the lead up to Glasgow 2026, five immersive experiences were supported by PacificAus Sports through the Pacific Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games Partnership and this investment ensures the effort will continue on the road to Amdavad 2030.
Commonwealth Games Australia CEO, Craig Phillips AM, who concurrently serves as Regional Vice President – Oceania for Commonwealth Sport, noted the importance of continued collaboration with the region in ensuring our home Games additionally serves as a home Games for our friends in the region.
“At Brisbane 2032, Australian Team success must be complemented by success for the athletes, coaches and officials of the Pacific region, as a home Games for the green and gold is additionally a home Games for so many in our region,” Phillips said.
“The continued investment of the Australian Government in the Pacific Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games Partnership ensures the great work that we’ve already begun can continue, including GAPS and its critical impact on those seeking participation at the Commonwealth Games.
“Amdavad 2030 will be one of the final global competitions available to Australian and Pacific athletes in the lead up to Brisbane 2032 and this investment ensures we can support hundreds of potential participants as they chase their dreams on the world stage.”
