NAME: Madeleine Fasnacht
STATE: TAS
SPORT: Cycling (Road)
A talented junior triathlete turned road cyclist, Madeleine Fasnacht has made big in roads since making the switch in mid-2015.
The 17-year-old from Hobart earned her Oceania Road Race crown earlier this year, when she made a bold move in the final 30km of the 80km race overtaking her rivals and winning the title by more than three minutes.
“I took a risk launching an attack with about 30km to go,” she said.
“With much encouragement in the form of yelling and screaming from the following team car, I tried my best to keep my tempo high.
“I kept my head down until finally crossing the finish line.”
It was a medical condition that prompted the change to cycling, a blessing in disguise for Fasnacht now with several cycling honours to her name.
“I had to stop long distance running and triathlon due to medical conditions that prevented me from being able to run,” she said.
“It was tough, but as a result I discovered the sport of cycling, which I love.”
Fasnacht will join the Australian team in Bahamas next month with plenty of confidence off the back of her competition success.
