Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) has welcomed the announcement from Commonwealth Sport endorsing India’s proposal for the city of Amdavad to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Amdavad (also known as Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat) will now be put forward to the full Commonwealth Sport membership, with the final decision to be made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025.

The 2030 Games will mark the centenary of the inaugural Commonwealth Games, held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The endorsement of Amdavad as the preferred host city represents a significant milestone for the Commonwealth Sport Movement and an opportunity to celebrate 100 years of sporting excellence, friendship and shared values.

CGA President Ben Houston said the announcement was an important step in providing clarity and direction for the future of the Games.

“Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) is extremely excited by Commonwealth Sport’s announcement that it has endorsed India’s proposal for the City of Amdavad to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games,” Houston said.

“We look forward to joining our colleagues from around the Commonwealth in November in approving the appointment of Amdavad as the 2030 Games Host.

“Along with Glasgow next year, Amdavad’s appointment will help create a platform for Commonwealth Sport to strengthen its hosting pipeline and secure a number of future hosting options from across the Commonwealth.

“CGA looks forward to playing its part in assisting Commonwealth Sport deliver inspirational Games over the coming years.”

Houston said the recommendation provides renewed momentum for the Commonwealth Sport Movement and confidence in its long-term future.

With Glasgow 2026 and now Amdavad 2030, Commonwealth Sport is well positioned to strengthen its hosting model and deliver meaningful legacy outcomes for communities throughout the Commonwealth.

Australia’s proud and enduring connection with the Commonwealth Games spans every edition since its inception, including five occasions as host nation.

CGA remains committed to supporting the Commonwealth Sport Movement and ensuring the Games continue to provide life-changing opportunities for athletes, coaches and officials, while celebrating diversity, inclusion and unity through sport.
