The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is set to deliver an action-packed and inclusive sports program, with the official medal event schedule revealed for the first time on Thursday.

More than 200 gold medals will be contested across 10 sports, with the largest Para-sport medal program in Games history also set to feature. It will see a record-breaking 47 medals awarded across six sports, underscoring Commonwealth Sport’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation.

The Para-cycling program will double in size from Birmingham 2022, with eight medal events, while Para-athletics will for the first time include events across the track, jumping and throwing.

Athletics will also see the introduction of the mixed 4x400m relay, while welcoming back the return of the Commonwealth Mile, an innovative change to the wider global athletics competition.

Last contested in 1966, the Mile returns to the track as a tribute to the iconic ‘Miracle Mile’ of Vancouver 1954 won by the iconic Roger Bannister, with Australian John Landy landing silver.

A total of 56 medals will be contested in the pool, the most extensive in Games history, including the addition of the men’s 800m freestyle and women’s 1500m freestyle.

CGA CEO Craig Phillips AM welcomed the announcement, highlighting the expanded opportunities for athletes, especially with the growth of the Para-sport program.

“The medal program for Glasgow reinforces the bold vision behind these reimagined Games,” Phillips said.

“It critically features a record-breaking 47 medal events for Para-sport, which is a testament to the Commonwealth Sport Movement’s commitment to inclusivity and a fully integrated Games.

“Australia’s best para-athletes will have the opportunity to compete on the same stage as their able-bodied counterparts – this is a groundbreaking aspect of the Commonwealth Games.

“We look forward to working with our Sport Members and other system partners to leave no stone unturned in the preparation of athletes to pursue success in Glasgow.

“Glasgow 2026 is shaping up to be an outstanding celebration of sport, culture, and diversity – one that will inspire athletes, engage fans and leave a lasting legacy.”

Australian Commonwealth Games Team Chef de Mission, Petria Thomas OAM, expressed her anticipation for the Games following the key announcement.

“The release of the medal program marks an important milestone on the exciting journey to Glasgow 2026,” Thomas said.

“Every edition of the Games has its own unique energy, and 2026 is shaping up to be truly special.

“With a world-class program and extensive Para-sport competition schedule, this will be a chance for our Australian Team to embrace the camaraderie, passion and pride that make the Games one of life’s most rewarding experiences.

“I look forward to working alongside our team to build a performance focused and inspiring environment – one that allows every team member to thrive and make these Games one to remember.”

Glasgow 2026 will feature 196 medal events in the sport disciplines that were also available at Birmingham 2022, with Australia looking to emulate the 105 medals won at that Games, including 52 gold.*

The Australian Commonwealth Games Team is set to send approximately 270 athletes to compete at Glasgow 2026, aspiring to be the number one nation in terms of gold medals won, overall medals won, medallists and the number of sports winning medals at the Games.

The 2026 Games will be the 23rd edition of the major multi-sport competition, which first began in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.

*Boxing medals won at Birmingham 2022 are not captured in this statistic, as the Boxing medal event program is due to be confirmed later this year.
