11 Aussie cyclists are in Ballerup, Denmark for the 2024 UCI Track World Championships after completing a training camp supported by CGA’s Green2Gold2Great funding.

To gear up for the world championships that got underway last night, the team trained in Belgium from October 6-11 in the fifth and final G2G2G-funded AusCycling event of the year.

Competing over 10,000km away from home always has it challenges, with jetlag posing a significant threat to performance. Birmingham 2022 Team Member Alessia McCaig, one of six world championships debutants in the squad, says that the camp is not only a good way to gear up for a major event, but also an important way to from Australia to Denmark.

“The funding from CGA has enabled our team to head to Belgium for the pre-worlds camp and ride on a track that we may race on in the future,” she says.

“It’s familiarisation opportunities such as this camp that provide the launching pad to achieving the results we are hunting, both now and for future major events.”

The team also includes four Commonwealth Games gold medallists who share significant world championships experience. McCaig says that for her and the rest of the team’s debutants, the senior presence will have a positive influence on their behaviour.

“They are very professional and that makes me want to be professional as well, because I know that will help me perform at my best and they will push me to be the best I can be too.”

The young sprint specialist from Bendigo, Victoria also has an eye on the future.

The team sprints and women’s scratch race open the competition, with the action running for five days from October 16 to 20; you can catch the finals action live on SBS On Demand.
