Bowls Australia National Selectors have identified the Para-Lawn Bowls squad that will vie for selection for Commonwealth Games gold.

Bowls Australia’s (BA) National Selectors, led by National Coach Gary Willis, have identified the para-squad that will vie for Commonwealth Games selection at an internal preparation camp in January next year.

The ten para bowlers and five vision impaired athletes will converge on South East Queensland’s Club Mount Tamborine from January 22-24, as selectors aim to narrow down to a team for Birmingham.

Based on form shown in the recent trials held in Tasmania and Victoria respectively, BA’s high performance staff have carefully deliberated and chosen the handful to progress through to the second stage of the trials.

In addition, a team of 20 combined Emerging and Pathways Jackaroos will make the trip to Queensland to provide competition for the Australian Jackaroos, who will also be on trial as they edge closer to their journey towards Birmingham.

Bowls Australia’s High Performance Manager for Para-Bowls, Ellen Falkner MBE, is looking forward to watching the trials in person, and relishes the depth that the Australian squad boasts.

“I am really excited by the strength and depth in talent that we have seen in this initial phase of selection for our Para Jackaroos and am very much looking forward to working with the squad and helping them to realise their potential over the forthcoming months,” Falkner said.

“We have a thorough programme in place in the build up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to ensure that those players who are selected to compete are prepared, ready and excited for the unique experience that the Games offers as the only multi-sport event that Bowls can currently compete in.”

Willis, who competed at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, is buoyed by the squad that will contend for a chance to represent Australia in England next year, noting that selectors will have a tough decision on their hands.

“Our Para athletes have just completed their respective trials at both Rosny Park in Tasmania and Sunbury in Victoria,” Willis said.

“The trials included an action-packed format that tested our extremely talented athletes to the limit and we are very keen to see how they progress throughout our Birmingham campaign in preparation for CG22.

“The players have made it extremely tough for our selectors, which is a great position to be in and very exciting for us moving forward.”
