Callum Peters announced as November Emerging Athlete of the Month

Following a breakout performance at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where he secured a silver medal, Callum Peters has been announced as the November Emerging Athlete of the Month.

One of 10 Indigenous athletes on the 429-strong Australian team, 19-year-old Peters was also the youngest member of the boxing team and the youngest boxer in the 17-man middleweight field.

Narrowly beaten for middleweight (75kg) gold by tough Scotsman Sam Hickey in the fight of the tournament, it was nonetheless an event that Peters won’t forget anytime soon.

“I didn’t know what to expect, it was my first time going overseas for a proper boxing event… so I smiled and waved and enjoyed myself,” Peters said.

Standing on the podium to claim the silver medal was even more of a surreal experience, one that spoke to Peters’ dedication and determination to always do his best.

“I had a great experience and being up there was killer, everyone was there to watch (you) and knowing how much time and effort I’ve put into the sport and seeing everything working out, trusting the process, it was incredible.”

Meanwhile, Peters’ time in Birmingham 2022 has only served to further spur him towards his next challenge, including a focus on the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games, while more short-term goals drive him for 2023.

“To compete at my home country for the next Commonwealth Games, it’d be good. I’d love to go to Victoria for the next Games, it’s definitely a possibility. I’ve got World Championships next year, and that will be good… and I’m really looking forward to it.”

With his goals firmly in mind, Peters credits his family with providing unwavering support and always being there for him.

“Has to be mum and dad and the family, always supported me and pushed me through hard times.”
