Matthew Richardson (cycling) and Alex Saffy (swimming) have been recognised at the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) Awards of Excellence, held in Perth last week.

Richardson, two-time gold medallist at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, was crowned 2022 WAIS Athlete of the Year following a year where he made his mark at the top of track sprinting.

Alongside his Commonwealth Games success, he won silver in the sprint at the World Championships, and was part of the team sprint, helping Australia break a decade long drought to claim the rainbow jersey as world champions.

In winning the WAIS Athlete of the Year award, Matt becomes the seventh cyclist to receive the honour.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners.
