Elite gymnasts from nine countries took to the transformed arena this afternoon for some last-minute training before the World Cup gets started tomorrow February 22 – 25.
Gymnasts will compete individually on their preferred apparatus, with a champion crowned in each discipline; four for women, six for men.
Among the Australian talent, defending her Uneven Bar Champion title is 17-year-old Queenslander, Rianna Mizzen.
The results have come quickly for the teenager, winning back to back National Championships in 2015 and 2016, titled 2016 All-Around National Champion and more recently the Portugal World Cup UB Champion.
Mizzen said her success hasn’t come without sacrifice from the typical teenage social life.
“My friends do a lot of social things,” she said.
“I usually have to say no, to concentrate on training”.
Mizzen’s rise in Gymnastics Australia landed her a role in the latest 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (GC2018) TV commercial “Greatness Rarely Seen’.
With just over 12-months to go until GC2018, Mizzen said the Games are her main focus at the moment.
“I spent six hours filming at the Coomera Gymnastics Centre,” she said.
“It was fun being a part of it.
“My big goal is to get to the Comm Games next year”.
Although this event does not contribute to selection for GC2018, the importance of performing well won’t be lost.
