In order for competitive combat athletes to meet the required weight for their category, athletes follow a regimented weight reduction program.

After two days in transit, all seven Australian Judokas have made weight and will put their body on the line for a podium outcome this morning (12am est) at Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, the Bahamas.

Athletes to watch:

At just 15-years-old, Sophie Robins is considered one of Australia’s best up & coming Judo fighters. Last month, she won gold in cadets, bronze in juniors, and silver in seniors, competing against Judokas 21 years and older. The only Western Australian on the team will fight for podium spot today.
Connor Smith will attempt to win an international medal today in the -90kg weight category. Having weighed in almost 5kgs under, the three-time National Champion will draw on his 11 years’ of experience to overcome any opponent’s size difference. The 17-year-old came from a pedigree of athletes with both Mum and Uncle Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallists. Smith also adds Rugby to his list of achievements having won a national title.
