Commonwealth Games Australia mourns the passing Christchurch 1974 cyclist Greg Barnes.

Hailing from Berala in western Sydney, Gregory John Barnes raced for Lidcombe-Auburn Cycle Club and was a prolific track cyclist in the 1970s.

A 10-time NSW championship, between 1972 and 1977, Barnes was selected to represent Australia at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, where he reached the quarter finals and finished 6th in the sprint.

That year, he won the national titles in the sprint and the kilometre time trial at Wiley Park in New South Wales.

Later in life, Barnes moved to the NSW North Coast and continued racing as a Masters cyclist with Coffs Harbour Cycle Club.

Barnes passed away in Grafton from a lung tumour.

Commonwealth Games Australia joins Cycling Australia in extending our condolences to Greg Barnes’ family and friends.
