Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallists and teammates Liz Watson, Joanna Weston and Kiera Austin have joined the Victorian Institute of Sport honour roll, named as winners of the prestigious VIS Award of Excellence held last week.
The awards, which recognise the achievements of Victorian athletes on both the local and global stage, recognised multiple winners across various award disciplines.
Austin herself was a double winner for the evening, awarded the Open Universities Australia Performance Lifestyle Award for excelling in her Medical Science degree and study commitments alongside a successful netball year.
Other award winners on the night included Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Amy Lawton (hockey), crowned the joint winner of the 2XU Rising Star Award, alongside up and comer taekwondo star Leon Sejranovic.
Three-time Commonwealth Games medallist, two-time gold medallist and alumnus Rachael Lynch (hockey), was recognised with the Sarah Tait Spirit Award.
The award, named in honour of the late Olympic rower, is in recognition of the athlete who most encompasses the spirit of the VIS, demonstrating courage, commitment and persistence to achieve their sporting goals, whilst showing the ability to inspire and bring out the best in others, engage with and bring pride to their community.
Emily Petricola OAM took home the Para Athlete Award, while skiing legend Lydia Lassila OAM received the Frank Pyke Achievement Award, presented to an athlete who has had a successful sporting career, made a significant contribution to the VIS and their sport, and most importantly is now flourishing in their career.
